“Fattoria Le Luci” is a small and young family-run winery located in Borgo a Mozzano in the beautiful Mediavalle Garfagnana. Founded in 2016 from the wine tradition of the Bartolai’Family and by the will of the owner Anselmo, to express and presenting with their wines the characteristics of the belonging territory. I vigneti

Vineyards

The vineyards, located on the Borgo a Mozzano hills, are widespread in 6 small land plots.
The main vineyard of the wine farm, consisting in about 4,000 square meters (about 1 acre), is the family one and it is located next to the winery.
The vineyard has been renewed, replanting the red grapes varieties (Sangiovese, Colorino, Merlot, Syrah and the 2 autochthonous grapes varieties, Barsaglina and Mammolo) from which the Lucino is produced.
The others vineyards, which are on the Borgo a Mozzano hills and in particular in locality “Rapaio”, “Podere del Livello”, “la Carraia” and “Monte”, are old vineyards recovered and put back into production within 2 years, with the highest vineyard that is located at 450 meters above the sea level (about 1,500 feet).
In 2023, a new vineyard in “Podere del Livello” has been implanted.
From these vineyards derive the white grapes for Biancaluce production, while the red grapes are used both for Rosèlisa and for Lucino production.

La vendemmia

Harvesting

The Borgo a Mozzano territory, although is only 20 km far from Lucca, shows morphological and climatic particular characteristics.
Rains are more frequent, in particular in spring and summer and the temperatures are fresher especially in the summer’s nights.
The grapes ripening is usually delayed and September plays a fundamental role in the harvesting.
The harvesting, which takes place usually after the 20th of September, is performed by hands with the use of crates and carefully selecting all the grapes.

La cantina

Winery

The winery, completed in 2016 thanks to the fundamental help of my father Romano, was obtained by the renovation of the old stable for the calves and the farm tool shed.
From here the adventure of “Fattoria Le Luci” began in conjunction with the bottling of our first bottle of “Lucino 2015”.

Grapes Varieties: Sangiovese, Merlot, Syrah and Mammolo (autochthonous grapes varieties).

“Governo” Tuscanian Wine Method: Before the harvesting, selected Merlot and Syrah bunches of grapes are hung in a controlled environmental conditions room in order to dehydrate the grapes. After about 45 days the grapes are taken, pressed by hand.

A part of the grape-must produced is placed in a tank with the wine previously produced. The remaining grape must is pressed by adding small quantities of previously produced wine. By controlling the temperature, the second alcoholic fermentation is started using the yeasts and concentrated sugars of the dried grapes. When fermentation has begun, the prepared must-grape-wine mass is added to the tank. At the end of the second alcoholic fermentation, the wine is left together with the grapes until March of the following year. Then the racking, clarification and bottling without filtration are done.

Production: 400 - 700 bottles.

An authentic and all around great experience visiting this very local winery in Tuscany.
We began with a little tour of the vines, as well as some background story of the winery.
We were severed three great vines accompanied by local ham and cheeses. We were very pleased with the whole experience and will recommend to anyone in the area looking for a real Italian activity!

Very authentic wine tasting experience. Anselmo, the winemaker, tours the vineyards and production before serving their delicious wines alongside cheese, parma, salami and bread. Very recommendable and affordable.
